OVEREATING?
Grandpa loved to tell stories. During our family visits to his home in New Jersey, we were a captive audience. One story in particular changed forever the way I thought about food.

I hear these wonderful exclamations from patients every day. Some patients even throw the word “magician” around. My father, also a doctor of chiropractic, has had me as a patient ever since I was a baby. He amazed me, inspiring similar exclamations. Once his magic fingers were on me, he quickly found tender spots I never knew I had. Even though I felt fine and was receiving preventive care, I always felt better afterward! It was like he had special laser-guided sensors in his fingers... a super power that I would later learn how to harness.

Mrs. Lamb tells everyone that she LOVES her doctor! Sometimes she is lucky enough to be kept waiting in Dr. Badside’s reception room for TWO hours past her appointment time. To top it off, the receptionist keeps to herself and never smiles. This gives Mrs. Lamb the opportunity to catch up on all the old, torn fashion magazines and Hollywood gossip rags from 2008 that are spread across the table in the corner of the room. There Mrs. Lamb sits, turning the dog eared pages until, with a whistle in her voice, the receptionist announces that the doctor is ready and herds Mrs. Lamb into a room down the hall.

Yes, you ARE a victim of the modern age! You spend much of your day banished for hours sitting in traffic, locked and chained to a work station or your home computer, and captivated on the couch watching TV. Your body is sustained in awkward positions. Your posture is crooked, compromised and fatiguing. Your neck cocks forward, causing your muscles to grip desperately to the back of your skull. The bands of connective tissue and muscles in your pelvis shorten and tighten for hours while you sit oddly perched on a chair. When the day brings needed breaks to your sedentary punishment, you suffer the results. Standing slowly, you teeter to a balance. Your body rebels against further movement. Like millions of people in your predicament, you suffer from pain in the arms, wrists, hands, feet or legs.

The water is murky and filled with unforeseen horrors that can rip the life from your body in a second. Sharks. The sharp steel of shipwrecks. Gear malfunctions. Such territory requires split second decisions for survival. You feel the chilling temperatures reach your bones, and wonder in panic, “Did I check all of my equipment? Tanks? Regulator? Where is my partner? Where are the sharks? Am I fully prepared?” Millions navigate other depths that carry as much complexity and danger. Frequently, they do so without planning. She was already there when I arrived... huffing and puffing... sporting stretchy black garb while a distressed expression blanketed her face. What was she thinking? Could it be,“This is wonderful! Who hoo, I love being chained to a treadmill for FIVE hours each week!!” I don’t think so. Her body language spoke more of the desperation displayed by Superman, outstretched arms, tightly clawed hands, scrambling feet, as he crept toward safety when in the proximity of kryptonite. After I had finished my routine at the gym, I was on my way out when I saw her STILL trucking away on the treadmill. Now, sweatier and obviously exhausted, she slapped her feet on the spinning belt to nowhere with a disheartening beat - the rhythm of an army drum calling for retreat. Sound like a familiar scenario?

What is the SECRET to OBTAINING YOUR DESIRES, you ask? If you are asking any self-help or "road to success" writer, motivational speaker or empowerment guru, the answer will always include one vital process. Read ancient philosophical texts or religious writings, and the wisdom of getting what you desire would include that same ingredient: Build a clear VISION of the desired outcome or object. The use of visioning has, and has long been, a powerful tool for attracting information and the objects or state of mind and body you desire.

Do you remember when your mom yelled at you for licking the perfluorinated compounds off the pizza box or microwave popcorn bag? I used to dread it when I opened my lunchbox only to see a tuna and mercury sandwich with a big red apple dressed in a pesticide glaze. Red dye #3 cherries and nitrite-laden lunchmeat would have been preferred. If I skipped lunch, I would be comforted to know that my toxic body burden could still be thoroughly increased by simply breathing the air! There is no escaping the many toxins and heavy metals that enter our body. The world and those in it are contaminated. This was never so evident then when scientists found the insecticide DDT (banned in the U.S. years ago) in the tissues of arctic penguins thousands of miles away from the closest sprayer. The hundreds of toxins and metals that we are exposed every day are not innocent, but can cause problems ranging from infertility, learning disabilities and autism to cancer, arthritis and allergies.

Sounds preposterous? It is! As recent as the eighteen century, scientists believed in "spontaneous generation." This means that when they saw maggots popping up out of nowhere in a garbage heap, they concluded that the maggots "spontaneously" or miraculously appeared out of thin air. Now we laugh about how off track scientists were back then. Today some doctors have the same theory. They believe that bacteria appear within the ear and cause ear infections. These bacteria also came out of nowhere and have to be attacked. Contemporary medical and chiropractic researchers know differently. Like the maggots in the garbage heap, bacteria come from a bad situation. They are nothing more than scavengers. While antibiotics may temporarily kill some bad germs (and good ones as well), chiropractic care removes the cause or the garbage. Once the ear is normalized, then the bacteria go away by themselves. Do you want to know the facts?

It looks like something you would see at a NASCAR event. It's made to lock and tether. The contoured seat sports a harness with two pink terry cloth strap pads. Without the presence of stale, crushed Cheerios, one may even mistake the infant seat as a throne fit for NASA ’s next shuttle mission. Today's car seat technology for children is truly impressive. However, safety may be an illusion. The false notion that a child’s car seat forms a protective cocoon, coupled with the inability of an infant or young child to communicate his or her symptoms, or be taken seriously when a complaint is voiced, can be a dangerous combination. Injuries sustained in even minor car accidents are often hidden or ignored. Injuries may produce no outward symptoms, elude the untrained eye, alter function and rob a child of his or her full potential.

It’s the 1800’s. You are sick. The local town doc gives you an exam. After rummaging through his black bag, tossing aside a small, corked brown bottle and positioning his spectacles, your treatment begins. Wielding a metal device sporting a shiny blade, he cuts open a vein on your arm. A few pints of blood are removed in hopes of curing what ailed you. This is not a new, high copay-like deterrent designed by your HMO to limit your doctor visits, but part of the available health care of the time. Credited for contributing to George Washington’s death in 1799, the practice of bloodletting was one of many medical practices that signified the need for advancement in health care.

The tip of the balance depends on the choices we make. Because no one can score on a playground unless he or she can see the goal, we make our best decisions when we have a clear picture of our health goal: “the perfect me.” Once that vision is ensconced in our minds, we are ready to make choices that will tip our balance toward optimum health and happiness.

January of 1993 seemed like any other time in the world of health care. Pills were being dispensed, tongues depressed, arms squeezed and stethoscopes wielded. In total, 388 million visits were being made each year to primary care physicians. On January 28th, the medical community surprisingly learned that its patients were making visits to other health care professionals as well. Research, published by Harvard Medical School doctor David M. Eisenberg in the New England Journal of Medicine, estimates that 425 million visits to providers of unconventional therapy were being made each year. That is 37 million more visits than made to primary care physicians! With this revelation, we see that the “unconventional” forms of care, often referred to as holistic care, such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage therapy and nutritional counseling are no longer alternative.
